As you can probably ascertain by now, the most common method of intake of CBD oil is internally (through ingestion). As CBD oil is a fairly new supplement, unlike with other supplements or medicines, exact dosing has not been well established. While more long-term studies are needed, there is no established CBD “overdose” and there are very few if any side effects at any dosage, low or high. Furthermore, each method of CBD oil intake has its own advantages and disadvantages and is also of course matter of personal preference. However, intaking CBD oils using a dropper would be the safest way to stay in control of your exact dosage. Additionally, pure CBD oil does not contain additives which might have potential side effects.
In regards to trying to find the right dosage for you, the following would be suggested. Start by purchasing high-quality CBD oil from a reputable company. We recommend a few on our site. A higher quality CBD oil will be more bioavailable, meaning the body will absorb a greater percent of it. Therefore, a lower dose of a higher quality CBD oil may be enough. All bottles will have a recommended dosage on the label and that would be a good place to start. You can then tweak the dose as you see fit. Some CBD users notice a change immediately, while others do not notice any improvement for several weeks. If you do not notice a change or improvement of condition after a few weeks, then you might consider increasing the dosage. Also, very important – as is the case with most herbal supplements, a small dosage 3-4 times a day is usually more therapeutic than one large dose per day.

A universal dosage for CBD or any natural supplement isn’t realistic, so let’s get that out of the way from the beginning. Therefore, we have found that there is a very broad guideline out there that is backed up with very real and scientific sources. It’s a good way to give you an overview but please keep in mind that this is a very general guideline, even if it is backed with legitimate studies.
General Health: 1 – 2.5mg/day
Chronic Pain: 2.5 – 20mg/day
Epilepsy: 200-300mg/day or 40mg/kg
Sleep Disorders: 40-160mg/day
Now that you have decided to try CBD, here are some tips to help you choose a quality CBD oil product and determine the best dose for you (in conjunction with your healthcare professional):
- Read the label to find out the total milligrams of CBD in the entire bottle/product and how many milligrams are in one standard dose. CBD products vary in potency, with some containing more total CBD than others. Most products will have on the label exactly how much CBD is in one dropper or drop, so you’ll be able to tell exactly how much is in there.
- Check the CBD and THC ratio. Some products may contain micro-doses of THC. But if you are looking for a product that’s strictly CBD and doesn’t come with the chance of experiencing any intoxicating or euphoric effects, then go for a product that contains no THC at all.
- Start with a small dose and work your way up if needed. Sometimes, a standard CBD oil dose is determined by your body weight, but this rule doesn’t work for everyone. Some people are more sensitive to cannabis compounds than others.
- Be aware of the desired effect prior to using CBD oil. If you know exactly what you are looking for from using CBD oil, then it will be easier for you and/or your healthcare professional to determine the proper dose.
Where do you buy CBD oils? You likely noticed that CBD products are everywhere these days. You can easily find CBD oil and other products online and in certain health food/vitamin stores or spas. In fact, they are now showing up in common chains such as Vitamin Shoppe, Urban Outfitters, CVS, and many other mainstream stores. To separate the highest quality products from the rest, look for one that has a certificate of analysis, or COA. This means that the manufacturer tests the product for contaminants, and it meets lab standards.
Whatever CBD product you decide to purchase should contain quality ingredients and be free of things such as corn syrup additives, artificial ingredients, or trans-fats. Look for GMO-free products. Also, you should avoid products extracted with toxic solvents like BHO, propane, hexane or other hydrocarbons. Solvent residues are especially dangerous for immune-compromised patients. Look for products that entail a safer method of extraction like supercritical CO2. If your method of intake is vaping, be very careful as vape pens may contain a solvent called propylene glycol. When you burn this solvent at high temperatures, it can degrade into formaldehyde and cause dangerous adverse reactions. You also want to purchase a CBD product that clearly states how much CBD is present and if it’s made with any other cannabis compounds or ingredients.
